History of the FGM

The history of the Foundation of Greater Montreal dates back to the 1980s. At that time, the majority of large North American cities already had a community foundation. The idea to create a similar foundation in Montréal started to take root among leading Montréal philanthropists.

Our pioneers worked hard to establish a new foundation in the Montréal area. Their conviction was based on the distinctive nature of the foundation, that funds would be secured in perpetuity, and would exclusively benefit the community of Greater Montréal.

Their task was also to obtain the financial support of well-known organizations in order to demonstrate the legitimacy of the project and to ensure the successful start of the operation. This was accomplished on the eve of 2000, when several large Montréal foundations decided to invest their confidence and their assets in order to enable the FGM to see the light of day.

Today, the FGM manages more than 293 funds with a total value of $113 million,
of which 154 are endowment funds that total over $50 million. Since 2003, grants totalling close to $7 million have been awarded.
