National Philanthropy Day: innovative and inspiring projects

On November 16, to mark National Philanthropy Day, around 200 experts, researchers, philanthropists, and community stakeholders of Greater Montréal attended a presentation by Juniper Glass, research consultant in philanthropy, entitled “A unique portrait of philanthropy for children”.  The strong interest for youths’ wellbeing was noted as it was revealed that, for at least 284 foundations and 32 companies in the Greater Montréal area, children are a priority in terms of financial support.

Then, three panelists working in different branches of philanthropy for children shared the innovative practices and successes of their respective organisations.

Thus, Catherine Sharp, co-president of the Young Leaders Circle at the CHU Sainte-Justine Hospital Foundation, talked about their fundraising events such as the Winter Triathlon. Ali Nestor, founder of the organisation Ali et ses Princes, explained his approach combining martial arts and educational support to help young dropouts get back to school. Finally, Holly McLellan, first Executive Director of Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) came all the way from Toronto for the occasion. She shared why and how her organisation places children and youths at the heart of their philanthropic action in order to raise their awareness to the world. It is also a mean for them to be actors of social change.

For this fifth edition, and to highlight this special year, we changed the format by encouraging discussion between the panellists and the audience. They exchanged on innovative practices in philanthropy for children.
